The keynote presentation was given by Chris Bayliss at the International Aluminium institute, who gave a comprehensive overview of production and application prospects of aluminium. This was followed by 20 presentations on optimal assemby of anodes and cathodes as well as many other aspects of aluminium production. Several presentations dealt with environmental issues related to aluminium production and use. The focus in the final session was on energy production and future prospects of the aluminium industry in Iceland.
After the final session on day three, delegates visited ISAL (Rio Tinto Alcan Iceland, at Straumsvík) and Norðurál (Century Aluminium, at Grundartangi). These visits were really interesting and delegates enjoyed being able to discuss various topics with specialists on-site.
The next conference is planned for 2014 in Reykjavik. Copies of the proceedings are available from Innovation Center Iceland at $500 plus postage (contact Birgir Jóhannesson: birgirj@nmi.is).
